Step 5: Figuring out your shiny frame

You've got your seed, you closed your game so you don't lose the den, and now you want to find the shiny. This is another part where we'll need to use another application/website. We're going to be using something called Raidfinder.

Raidfinder is released on Github, and can be located here. When you open the site, you're landed in the readme page.

Don't worry about the text too much if you're not a developer nerd, or you don't already have it downloaded. Instead, scroll down to the latest release, which should be located at the top and has the "Latest release" highlight next to it.

Then under this, go down until you see "Assets." Beneath assets is a list of download links for various computer types (win32 and win64 for Windows computers.) Relative to your computer, download the appropriate .zip file. Don't worry about the .zip.sha256 types if they're not relevant to you.

As a Mac user I downloaded this:

If you're a Windows user, you'll probably want to download this:

Now go to your Downloads folder or wherever the .zip was downloaded to, and unzip it. Go through the process of downloading it to your computer until it's downloaded. (If you don't know how to download apps to your computer, that's not... something I can really help you with.)

When it's all ready, open up the application. It should up to a window that looks like this:

There's a lot going on here, and a lot that you don't need to worry about yet. So I'll just guide you through the things you do need to pay attention to for now, and when it comes up (in a step or two) I'll show you the other parts.

So first of all, look in the top right here where it says "Profiles." If you have Shield, you'll need to make a new profile with Manager.

Don't worry about TID and SID; just put in the game type, and a name for it so it easily indicates which game it is for you. The application defaults to Sword so you don't need a Sword title, but you're free to make one if you want to.

Now, back in Raidfinder, select the profile you want to use.

After that, look to the box underneath the Profiles one - the RNG Info.

Remember the seed you got in step 4? Well, in this area where it says "Seed" is where you'll put it in.

Don't worry about Initial Frame or Max Results just yet.

After that, go to Settings and look at the first (top left) drop down. Remember the beam type you wanted? Put that in here. A red beam is 'normal', and a purple/rare beam is 'rare.' Don't worry about anything else here yet.

Now we're going to the "Den" option. The thing about the "Den" option is that it doesn't match the Den # of Serebii or anywhere really, and has no indicator as to what Den it is in the drop down options.

But remember in step 1 when you noted the location of your den? (You can also remind yourself this by just looking in your game.) So in the drop down list, look for that exact location. In this example, we're doing a den located at the Giant's Mirror.

As you can see, there are 5 options for Giant's Mirror dens. Which one is the one you want? Well, there's a pretty simple way of checking that, even if it can get tedious for areas that have more than 5 dens.

So, we're going to select the first one.

Now when I've selected this den, the first Pokémon species under 'Settings' to the right is Gastly. But that can't be right! I'm looking for a grass den, and the Pokémon I caught was Ferroseed. Ferroseed and Gastly share no types in common.

So now I'm going to try the next Giant's Mirror den.

This one has Mantyke, which also has no types in common with Ferroseed.

Then number 82 has Nickit, but number 83 has Cherubi, which is a grass type, the same as Ferroseed. So this is probably the right den! I can also double check it by clicking on the 'species' drop down, and making sure Ferroseed is there.

And it is!

You don't have to select Ferroseed here, though; the Pokémon species doesn't matter yet. I'll explain why in a second.

So we have the right den, the right beam type, and the seed.

Go to Max Results under RNG info and put in, let's say, 5000 to start at. You can always increase and decrease this later, but I think 5000 (or less) is a good number of results to start with.

Next, in filters, go to 'Shiny' and select 'Star/Square' if you don't care what shiny it is. If you're only looking for a Square shiny (or otherwise), then select one or the other.

Now back under RNG info, click 'Generate.'

If you're lucky enough, at least one result should appear. If you're really lucky, more than one result will appear.

What the results give you are the exact IVs, nature, ability, gender
, and characteristic of the Pokémon at that frame. They also give you the shininess, and the type of shininess. The reason I said species doesn't matter for this step is because only the first three frames (relative to your current frame) are fixed. That means frames 1, 2, and 3 have the same Pokémon, but all the frames after that will be randomized until you are 3 frames away from it.

The shiny you see here is at frame 3914. What Pokémon is it? Who knows! You're not on frame 3912 yet, you're only on frame 1.

The thing to note about Ability is that the Ability is fixed; that is, if all the Pokémon in the den have a hidden ability, and your shiny frame also aligns with a hidden ability frame, then that Pokémon is not only shiny but also has Hidden Ability. Same goes for gender, and all the IVs.

**NOTE: The gender of the Pokémon at the frame is not consistent for some species (Ponyta and Togetic come to mind), so don't take the gender of one Pokemon from your den at your shiny frame to be indicative of all species. If you are particular about the gender, I would actually suggest selecting the species you're particular about the gender for and check the frame's gender for that 'mon.

You can see where your next shinies are as well by increasing the Max Results.

In this example, when I increased Max Results to 10,000, I got several more shiny frames. Which is pretty lucky, tbh.

If you are more ambitious and want a 6IV HA shiny, you can modify filters here as well. You will also need to tackle filters in another step, though, so I won't go too much into it yet. However I do feel that if you care, this section should be pretty self explanatory.

And now you've found your shiny frame! This is the approximate distance away your shiny is. Again, I think under 5k is good, but under 10k could be a lot worse. I've had friends who've had their shiny frame like 20k frames away, which is... yikes.

Anyway, now that you've gotten the distance of your shiny frame - in this case, 3914 - we want to go to https://www.timeanddate.com/date/dateadd.html.

Now in Start Date, we want to put the current date on the Switch - in my case, it's July 20, 2020.

Next, under Days, we want to put the number of skips away our shiny frame is. This is the distance of the shiny frame, minus one. So in this case, it'll be 3913.

Ignore the other slots, but make sure that Add/Subtract is set to Add.

Now click Calculate New Date.

This is exactly the date our Switch needs to be on in order to encounter our shiny frame. However, it's not as easy as just entering the date in the Switch and expecting the shiny to be there. No, it's a little more tedious than that...

Which brings us to step 6.
